Tax Information

Proof of Health Insurance for Your Taxes

There is no longer a penalty for not having health insurance. Those enrolled in coverage will get tax forms to show the coverage they had in the last year.

This is also reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for you. You may get more than one 1095 form if you and your dependents had more than one type of health coverage in the last year. This includes Medicaid, FAMIS, employer-sponsored or Virginia's Health Insurance Marketplace coverage.

If you, your spouse, or one of your children were enrolled in a Medicaid or FAMIS program that meets the minimum health insurance coverage requirements, you will get a 1095-B form from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The 1095-B form you get in the mail

The Commonwealth of Virginia should mail the 1095-B forms by January 31 of each year. The Commonwealth will also send this information directly to the IRS. You should keep the 1095 form with your tax records.

Note: You will not get a 1095-B form for enrollment in limited-coverage Medicaid programs.
