Coverage for Children

Virginia's Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) and Medicaid for Children Programs

Virginia’s Medicaid and FAMIS programs provide full-benefit health coverage to children who are under 19 and have household income within certain limits. Medicaid also provides coverage to certain categories of children, such as those in foster care and children with Developmental Disability waivers. There are no monthly premiums or out-of-pocket costs when getting care, such as copays for doctors appointments or prescriptions.

Children in Medicaid and FAMIS get 12 months of continuous coverage starting from the date of their enrollment or last renewal. This means that their coverage is protected and cannot be reduced or ended until the end of the 12-month period - even if they have a household change, like an increase in income
